German School System

Saxony-Anhalt

There are 16 states in Germany and each state has its own school system.

 

School begins at the age of 6.

 

Every child has to attend school for at least 9 years.

 

Subjects are German, English, Maths, Science, PE, French, History, Art, Music and many more.

 

There are private schools where parents have to pay fees and state schools which are free of charge.


What happens after school in Germany?

"Berufsfachschule"

lasts for 2 or more years
only for certain jobs
special school that teaches trades

"Fachgymnasium"

lasts for 3 years
graduation enables you to go to a university
